Belize Bird Rescue Center – BBN’s organization of the week

Posted: Wednesday, April 18, 2018. 8:48 a.m. CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize Bird Rescue Center is a non-governmental organization founded in 2004 and has been selected as BBN’s organization of the week for all its conservation efforts in protecting different species of birds in Belize.

It is the only multi-species avian rescue and rehabilitation center in Belize.

The organization focuses on caring for injured birds and nursing them back to good health, allowing them to go back into the wild.

Belize Bird Rescue is situated on a privately owned 50 acre reserve.

More than half of the land directly supports the avian rehabilitation and the remainder is a wildlife sanctuary bordered by 100 acres of dense forest.

Over the years, through donations and support from volunteers and visitors, funding has grown.

Belize Bird Rescue is grateful for the continuing support of Welltech LLC, the World Parrot Trust, Mark Hagen (Hagen Inc), local volunteers and companies, plus the wealth of knowledge brought to the organization by visiting professionals in avian medicine, rehabilitation and behavior.

The Belize Bird Rescue center currently has 17 small enclosures (min 8’x8’x4′) used for quarantine, introduction, recuperation and permanently disabled birds.

Five large flight aviaries (approx 60’x30’x20′) and 10 pre-flight-sized enclosures ranging (12’x20 to 20×30′).

They also have 6 large rolling cages and 3 large wire dog-crates for isolation and observation as well as numerous smaller crates, cages and enclosures and 3 off-site release aviaries and one more under construction.

Presently, with the growing family of birds and parrots, the Belize Bird Rescue center is in desperate need of another large flight aviary for the white-front parrots (Amazona albifrons).

Their current aviary is close to non-releasable and vocal yellow heads, as well as human activity.

The Belize Bird Rescue center is also actively engaged in conservation and saving wildlife campaigns.

Their public outreach programs continue to expand their passion for rehabilitation keeps the BBR’s bird family flourishing.

BBN congratulates the Belize Bird Rescue center for their admirable efforts and wishes the team the best!
