Cordel Hyde: PUP should allow contested conventions everywhere

Posted: Friday, June 8, 2018. 12:15 pm CST.

BBN Staff:  Last month the People’s United Party (PUP) endorsed businessman, Gilroy Usher Sr., as its standard bearer in the Port Loyola constituency.

Readers will remember that recently elected Belize City Councilor, Dr. Candice Pitts, had applied for the post but was not given the green light to challenge Usher.

In an interview with the press, PUP National Deputy Leader, Cordel Hyde, said the party made a mistake in not allowing Pitts to contest the convention.

“…my position is this, if you can’t win a contested convention, you don’t deserve to be standard bearer…” said Hyde.

According to Hyde, if the party will allow a challenge to Paul Thompson in the Albert constituency then challenges should be allowed in every other constituency.

He told the press that he hopes the party learns from its mistake in Port Loyola.
