Explosions during Nicolas Maduro’s speech; Venezuelan officials say President was targeted

Posted: Sunday, August 5, 2018. 8:45 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Venezuela’s President, Nicolas Maduro survived an alleged attempt on his life yesterday, according to Venezuelan officials despite conflicting reports that the incident was caused by an exploding gas tank.

According to reports, Maduro was giving a speech at a celebration of the National Guard’s 81st anniversary in Caracas when several explosions were heard in close proximity.

The incident occurred at exactly 5:41 p.m. on Saturday. Venezuela’s Information Minister informed later that several ‘drone-like devices’ armed with explosives detonated near Maduro during his appearance at the military event.

Venezuelan officials informed that Maduro was safe and unharmed but said seven other people were injured as a result of the explosions.

The entire ordeal was captured by local Venezuelan media.

The soldiers that were lined up for the celebratory event, immediately broke ranks and began running.

Previously known for its wealth in oil, the country is now in the grips of a five-year crisis under President Maduro’s socialist government in which Venezuelans have struggled affording scarce commodities such as food and medicine under soaring inflation.
