Authorities destroy found cocaine

BBN Staff: The Belize Police Department yesterday destroyed 1,056 pounds of cocaine.

The drugs were burnt after having received the directive from the court. Present to witness the destruction was a magistrate, a justice of the peace, and a member of the media.

The drugs were found in an abandoned Toyota Prado on the Coastal road earlier this month.

Police had detained 12 Guatemalans and a Belizean in connection with the case. However, authorities did not have enough evidence to charge the men with drug trafficking.

Two of the men took responsibility for firearms that they were busted with and were fined over $100,000 for the firearm offenses. The men paid the fines up front and were then deported.

The Prado is registered in Belize and the media has been constantly requesting information on the owner of the vehicle.

The Belize Police Department, however, has withheld the information.

Authorities plan to increase patrols on the Coastal road, according to police.
