Ministry of Education supports school managers for ‘docking’ teachers salaries

Posted: Monday, December 31, 2018. 12:41 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Last week, the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) via a press release blasted school managers for docking teachers’ salaries who attended a BNTU protest last month.

Since then, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has come out in full support of school managers by saying that the managers have the authority to disallow the claim for payment for any period of unauthorized absence by teachers.

“[Managers] are required to abide by and to enforce the rules…..If a teacher is absent without authorization or leave, management is expected to treat every such instance in accordance with the education rules. This applies to absences on November 7th and any other school day,” the release from the MOE states.

BNTU called the school managers ‘the Grinch who stole Christmas’ for docking the salaries of teachers, especially during the Christmas Season.

The teachers affected were the ones who attended a protest organized by the BNTU against the Ministry of Education in Belmopan City on November 7, 2018.

BNTU President Elena Smith said that docking the salaries of teachers is considered ‘union busting’ and the teachers are being punished for standing up for their constitutional rights.
