US issues sanctions on four Venezuelan governors aligned to Maduro

Venezuelan President

BBN Staff: The United States today announced that it issued sanctioned against four Venezuelan governors aligned with Nicolas Maduro’s regime.

On Friday, February 23, there were violent clashes with members of Venezuela’s armed forces and the Venezuelans who tried to enter humanitarian aid into Venezuela.

The US says that the governors aligned with the illegitimate Maduro regime prevented desperately needed international humanitarian assistance from entering Venezuela and/or engaged in corruption to the detriment of the Venezuelan people, in some cases involving human rights violations.

Sanctions were imposed on the governors of the states of Zulia: Omar Prieto, Carabobo: Rafael Lacava, Apure: Ramon Carrizalez, and Vargas: Jorge Garcia Carneiro.

“The United States will not stand by idly while the people of Venezuela are denied basic necessities and made to suffer needlessly. These actions have consequences,” a statement from the US Department of State says.

The US further reaffirms their call on Venezuelan officials and security forces to allow urgently needed food and medicine to enter and be distributed throughout the country. This humanitarian assistance must be allowed to reach Venezuelans in need.

U.S. also informs that the sanctions need not be permanent since they are intended to change behavior.

The United States says that it will continue to take appropriate action to respond to the situation in Venezuela as it develops.
