PUP calls on GOB to respect court ruling

Posted: Wednesday, April 3, 2019. 7:51 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The People’s United Party (PUP) is calling on the Government of Belize (GOB) to respect Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin’s ruling and postpone the April 10th referendum on taking the territorial dispute with Guatemala to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The PUP said this evening, that it was happy the Chief Justice ruled as he did because of the 2008 Special Agreement and the resulting referendum, were unconstitutional and illegal.

“The PUP is insisting that the Government show respect for our processes including our system of government, which has a clear separation of powers between the legislative and executive branches of the government, something we believe was not respected by the Prime Minister and his Cabinet,” the PUP said.

The party also said that the issue is of national importance and thus GOB should remain compliant with the law. The PUP said that the ruling is a victory for the people, and chided the Prime Minister Dean Barrow for “attacking the judiciary” at the press conference he held earlier.
