Attorney General to host press conference on Vital Statistics Unit

Posted: Monday, April 29, 2019. 9:43 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Vital Statistics Unit has been at the center of the public’s eye with Belizeans claiming incompetence by the offices.

Many Belizeans have claimed to be disenfranchised because of missing or lost birth certificates and other documents.

During the senate meeting held on April 15, 2019, the Attorney General, Michael Peyrefitte, warned that any individuals seeking to acquire Belizean citizenship, especially for the coming I.C.J. referendum, without providing accurate information, will be criminally charged.

At the time, Peyrefitte accused the P.U.P. of trying to milk the issue to push “dangerous propaganda” and a false view of the Unit.

With only 9 days to Belize’s national referendum on whether or not to take Guatemala’s claim on Belize’s territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the Attorney General has called a press conference today scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Belize Biltmore Plaza.

The Attorney General will issue an update on the Vital Statistics Unit.
