Posted: Monday, July 1, 2019. 9:33 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize Olympic & Commonwealth Games Association (BOCGA) has upgraded its annual fun run to the first-ever celebration of Olympic Day, to be held on Sunday, July 7th.

The event, being held at the Digi Park in Belize City is a family-oriented affair that will run from 1:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. and feature games such as lime and spoon, hula-hoop and sack racing. The event will also feature exhibitions from the national federations of various disciplines such as bodybuilding, cycling, track and field, table tennis and volleyball.

“Join us in celebrating this global event that celebrates the founding of the Olympic Movement. The goal of the movement is to encourage everyone around the world, regardless of age, gender or athletic ability to practice physical activity,” the BOCGA said.

The main feature of the event will be the 23rd annual Olympic Day Run, which is open to runners of all ages and sectioned off into five categories. The Infant category (under 10 years) will run from the Digi Park to the Fisheries compound and back. The Youth category (10-13 years) will run from Digi Park to the corner of Baymen Ave. and Princess Margaret Drive, head back down past Digi Park to the Belize Ex-Servicemen

League building, then head back to the park.

The Junior category (14-19 years) will follow the same route but will go past Ex-Servicemen League building and head to the roundabout across from Golden Bay on Marine Parade, before heading back to the Digi Park.

Both the Open category (women 20-34 years and men 20-43 years) and Masters category (women 35+ and men 44+) will follow the same route as the Juniors but go down to Celebrity Restaurant then head back to the park.

The first 100 participants registered will receive a commemorative T-shirt while all participants will receive a certificate. First, second and third place (males & females) in each category will receive a medal. Refreshments will be provided to all participants after the event. The BOCGA added that it is pushing to make the upgraded Olympic Day Celebration an annual event.
