By Aaron Humes: Minister of Education and Culture, Patrick Faber, has wished Belize’s Indian community a happy Diwali (Festival of Lights), being observed this weekend.

Diwali is typically observed between mid-October and mid-November and represents the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance in Hindu tradition.

On the first day, Hindu families clean their houses and decorate them and on the second or third day, the main celebration is observed, featuring observants in their finery, lighting oil lamps and displaying them at their homes and workplaces. They pray to the Hindu gods for peace and prosperity in the coming year and then share gifts and a feast.

The last two days are dedicated in some areas to renewing family and work relationships such as husband and wife and siblings.

Today is being observed as a holiday in most of India and Sri Lanka and communities with major Indian populations in the Americas such as Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and others.

We add our best wishes for a Happy Diwali to the Indian community of Belize.
