By BBN Staff: The Belize Audubon Society (BAS) updated the nation on the status of the investigation following a yacht dropping anchor on the barrier reef on Sunday.

The BAS said today that Third Point founder Daniel Loeb, the owner of the 200-foot Yacht “Samadhi,” is fully cooperating with authorities following the incident.

“While the extent of the damage is being assessed by officers of the Department of the Environment, preliminary investigations conducted on Tuesday, February 11th, confirms damage is evident but the extent is yet to be determined.

The BAS also said that Ryan Davies, fleet operations manager at Wright Maritime Group who manages safety at the vessel, has stated their company will be collaborating with focal environmental groups on the remediation and conservation of the Lighthouse Reef to make amends for this unfortunate accident.

The BAS and local authorities were made aware that the yacht had dropped anchor on the reef when someone who witnessed the incident took video footage and posted it on the internet. The vessel had legally entered Belizean waters and absconded following the incident.

The story has already been picked up by international media, being reported by entities such as Bloomberg Green.
