“Vaccines might not help with COVID-19 right away,” Director of Health Services suggests

By BBN Staff: Research into the COVID-19 pandemic is taking place all over the world and several medical manufacturers are actively working on preparing a vaccine as soon as possible, but the Director of Health Services for the Ministry of Health, Dr. Marvin Manzanero, says that vaccines might not be an immediate solution.

Manzanero pointed out on today’s session of Ask the Experts that even workable vaccines need additional time to have their effects studied, which leaves their effectiveness questioned until more data is available.

The new data over the last 24-48 hours is suggesting that even if there is a vaccine they still don’t know how much of an immunity response it can generate so we would not know how much protection you can get from a vaccine,” Manzanero said.

He also noted that despite all the research being done globally, there is currently no specific treatment for COVID-19, and no one specific rapid test that has proven to be more effective than the more than 70 types being studied. As such, Belize continues to utilize PCR tests until a more viable option is made available.

This week the United States-based company Moderna, announced that it has seen promising results from its vaccine human trials and has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two more waves of human trials which will include hundreds and then thousands of test subjects.
