United States placing restriction on incoming travelers from Brazil

Posted: Tuesday, May 26, 2020. 10:19 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The United States is imposing a travel ban on all non-American travelers trying to enter the US that have been to Brazil within the past two weeks.

Brazil has recently become the second-worst hit country by COVID-19, prompting the US to impose the travel ban which, will come into effect on May 28. The travel ban will not affect US citizens, or the spouse, parent, legal guardian, or child of a US citizen or lawful permanent resident, and most siblings under the age of 21.  The ban will also not affect trade between the two countries.

The White House published the suspension order on Sunday which said, “The potential for undetected transmission of the virus by infected individuals seeking to enter the United States from [Brazil] threatens the security of our transportation system and infrastructure and the national security.”

White House National security adviser Robert O’Brien told CBS that the US government hopes the ban will be a temporary measure, but that all efforts must be made to protect Americans. He also noted that the government will be looking at imposing other travel bans and will do so on a country-to-country basis.

The US currently stands as the worst-hit country of COVID-19 with over 1.6 million confirmed cases and almost 100,000 deaths. Meanwhile, Brazil has recorded over 360,000 cases and over 22,000 deaths.
