Omar Figueroa out of UDP leadership race

Posted: Monday, June 22, 2020. 3:56 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Area representative for Cayo North and Minister for the Environment, Dr. Omar Figueroa, has apparently withdrawn from the race for leadership of the United Democratic Party.

Figueroa did not respond to our requests for comment this weekend.

Dr. Figueroa was first elected in 2015 in a by-election in Cayo North over the late Richard Harrison and retained his seat in the general election a few months later. He has presided as deputy speaker of the House of Representatives and was made a Minister of State, later elevated to full Minister.

Figueroa’s name began emerging as a potential compromise candidate for party leader after the withdrawal of short-lived party leader-elect John Saldivar in February. He personally never addressed his interest in running for party leadership and has now retreated back to the sidelines again.

The party has confirmed that its second leadership convention this year will be held in Belize City on July 12 at the ITVET Grounds. Four candidates remain in the race: Saldivar, former Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley, Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington, and Education Minister Patrick Faber. The winner is expected to lead the party into the upcoming general elections.
