Government ‘considering’ lifting State of Emergency for Orange Walk villages

Posted: Friday, July 24, 2020. 10:28 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: While he says the ultimate decision will be announced by Prime Minister Dean Barrow, Minister of Health Pablo Marin confirmed that discussions have been held about lifting the State of Emergency imposed a few days ago in the villages of Blue Creek and San Felipe, Orange Walk District.

“I think definitely it will come in a while. Discussions have been put in place, but we just need to hold, I think this is the right time for people to be aware that if you are border jumping we will have to lock your community and then that’s the only way for us to be able to safeguard the rest of the Belizean people,” Marin told reporters this week.

The Minister acknowledged that villagers were inconvenienced by not being able to access valued resources, but safety at this time reigns above all, he said: “I think we have to take that in consideration, but also as Belizeans on a whole, we need to protect them. So, whenever we see cases going up in one community, we need to be aware of that.”

Fortunately for the two villages, Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero confirmed that there are no active cases occurring there: “Nobody is ill, but when that was lockdown is because we had an active contact tracing happening. We did manage to screen all the persons in the area and I understand there is going to be a decision made in terms of the state of emergency for those 2 villages.”

The DHS as National Quarantine Authority would have a hand in such a decision.
