By Aaron Humes: Dr. Leopold Perriott, Director General of the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), has retired effective August 1 and is succeeded by his deputy Diana Castillo-Trejo who will act in the role.
Dr. Perriott, formerly a faculty member of the University of Belize (UB), joined the SIB in 2012 as Deputy Director General and assumed the top post in 2014. The institution credits him with implementing initiatives to modernize the statistical body, such as overall institutional strengthening, capacity building of SIB’s staff, review and improvement of statistical methodologies, strengthening of the Belize National Statistical System, and spearheading preparations for the upcoming Population and Housing Census.
The SIB board and management have extended their gratitude to Dr. Perriott and best wishes to his successor.
The SIB produces regular statistics on Belize in areas ranging from education to the economy. In recent years it has become best known for its monthly production of statistics on trade (exports and imports), inflation (Consumer Price Index), labour (twice-annual Labour Force Survey) and GDP (quarterly gross domestic product review).
