Posted: Thursday, September 3, 2020. 3:07 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: In keeping with a lean, mean September Celebrations observance, the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) is unveiling the calendar of official events today, most virtually.

The official launch of the Celebrations is next Sunday, September 6, highlighting this year’s proposed host, Dangriga Town. On September 7, there will be a presentation on “Creativity in a Time of Adversity”, highlighting reactions to COVID-19. A ninth night virtual bram will take the nation to the Tenth and official opening ceremonies at 10:30 a.m. next Thursday.

Ecumenical services for the National Day of Prayer will be held at 10 a.m. September 13, repeated at 7:00 p.m. The annual September lecture will see four panelists discussing the topic “Decolonizing History: Decolonizing An Independent Belize.”

The Department of Youth Services is hosting a virtual art exhibit, while there are tentative plans for a Belizean Song Showcase featuring past winners of the National Song Competition in the Belize category.

National Colours Day, National Service Day and a virtual school children’s rally take place on September 18, and the three day Sir Barry Belikin Bash goes on virtually.

The Official Flag Raising Ceremony and Independence Day ceremony close the show on September 20 and 21. There are tentative plans for a poetry night and virtual Carnival for September 11 and 12.

The annual theme is “Overcoming adversity, Creating opportunity, Belizeans unite for prosperity.”

More coming up.
