Concerns raised after Indian students register to vote in Belize Rural Central

Posted: Wednesday, September 9, 2020. 3:12 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: An official date has not yet been set for the upcoming general elections.

However, politicians continue to campaign and encourage electors to register to vote with hopes of garnering their votes for the elections.

But, in Belize Rural Central, the PUP standard bearer, Dolores Balderamos Garcia has raised concerns over groups of Indian students who were in line to register to vote.

The Indian students are reportedly enrolled at the Central America Health Sciences University Belize Medical College.

During the interview with our colleagues at News 5, a UDP operative was allegedly seen with a bag of passports belonging to the Indian students.

The Elections and Boundaries department states that any person who is a resident of a Commonwealth Country who has resided in Belize for not less than twelve (12) months and a resident of a Commonwealth Country who is domiciled in Belize Resident in the Electoral Division not less than 2 months is eligible to register to vote.

Garcia said that the students have no permanent connection to Belize and are usually here to complete their studies and then leave.
