Valentino Shal makes history as first Mopan Maya CEO in Belize

By BBN Staff: The government of Belize, this evening, officially announced its long-anticipated list of Ministry Chief Executive Officers, and among them, Valentino Shal, who was named the CEO in the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government made history as Belize’s first Maya CEO.

Prior to his appointment, Shal was the managing partner of Praxi5 Advisory Group Ltd., a premier development consulting firm based in Belize City. Shal has worked in the development field for the past 18 years in Belize and the wider Caribbean.

He has provided consulting services to major multilateral institutions such as the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, the Caribbean Development Bank and other international and local development partners including the government of Belize.

Shal also previously worked as a community development specialist for the Belize Social Investment Fund; program manager for Peace Corps Belize and as a development liaison in Belize for the government of Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.

His work has focused primarily on poverty reduction, social infrastructure, and environmental conservation. Under these sectors, he has worked specifically on youth development, small enterprise development, alternative livelihoods, social and gender impact assessments, environmental and social safeguards, tourism development, protected areas management, monitoring and evaluation and climate change adaptation.

Shal has also previously served on the Boards of several organizations including Galen University, the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) and the Ya’axche Conservation Trust (YCT).

Coming from the Toledo District, Shal proudly speaks two indigenous languages fluently namely Maya Mopan, Maya Q’eqchi, and he spends his down time at his cacao farm near San Pedro Columbia.

The new CEO holds a Master’s Degree in Environment and Development from the London School of Economics and Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Belize.
