By BBN Staff: The World Health Organization (WHO) continued to warn on Monday that the COVID-19 virus will continue to spread in the months to come, the BBC reports.
Around the world, there have been 81 million confirmed cases and almost 1.8 million deaths.
One hundred and ninety countries are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and it continues to rise in many regions.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “There will be setbacks and new challenges in the year ahead – for example new variants of Covid-19 and helping people who are tired of the pandemic continue to combat it.”
The United States has recorded the highest amount of confirmed cases at 19 million and 330,000 deaths.
Countries such as India, Pakistan and Switzerland have become the latest countries to detect the new more transmissible COVID-19 variant.
The new variant first detected in the UK has also now been found in South Korea, Canada and Europe.
A scientific advisor from the UK noted that more decisive national action is needed as the new variant spread.
New curfew measures were announced in South Africa where the new variant was also found.
