Activist group PETAL steps up public awareness campaign on gender-based violence

By BBN Staff: The community activist group Promoting Empowerment Through Awareness for Les/Bi Women (PETAL) is striving to regularize having discussions about gender-based violence by scaling up its public awareness campaign.

PETAL held a community outreach session on Antelope Street extension and in the surrounding area yesterday, meeting with people in the community and sharing pertinent information about gender-based violence, human rights, and where women and girls in abusive situations can get help.

Charrice Talbert, President of PETAL, explained that since 2018, the organization has been holding outreach sessions once a month on the 25th of each month, keeping with the theme of November 25 marking the International 16 days of activism against GBV. Talbert said that PETAL will be increasing the outreach activities to twice a month, keeping with the 25th of each month, and randomly adding an additional day during that month.

“Whenever we engage a person we ask to have a minute or two of their time. Depending on how much of a rush they are in they might not get a chance to get all the information I’m trying to give so provide them with a package. Within the package, there is information that concerns, human rights, dating violence, HIV, human trafficking, state violence, and things like that.”

Talbert says that her hope is that spreading the information will serve to greatly reduce incidents of GBV in Belize.
