Kobe Bryant’s Legacy Continues on One Year After His Tragic Death

Posted: Tuesday, January 26, 2021. 3:03 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, January 26, 2021, marks exactly one year since basketball legend Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California.

Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were on the aircraft with seven others: John Altobelli, Keri Altobelli, Alyssa Altobelli, Christina Mauser, Sarah Chester, Payton Chester, and Ara Zobayan, when it crashed into a hillside. Bryant, 41, is survived by wife Vanessa and his other daughters Natalia, Bianca, and Capri, who was born in June 2019.

News of his death spread worldwide, with memorials drawn, painted built, and posted honoring Bryant’s legacy, not only to the game of basketball but to the way he was able to inspire others to better themselves. Today, another sports icon, Lebron James, spoke on the anniversary of Bryant’s death, stressing that his legacy was immortal.

“There’s a lot of things that die in this world,” James said. “But legends never die, and he’s exactly that.”

The United Kingdom-based media house The Sun said that at least 10 lawsuits have been filed since the crash. The first of those lawsuits is a ‘wrongful deaths’ suit, filed against the helicopter company and the estate of Ara George Zobayan, who was the pilot at the time.

Bryant’s wife has also reportedly filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles in an attempt to suppress the mass sharing of photos taken of the victims of the crash site, taken by people who did not have any investigative reasons for doing so. Reports are that Vanessa Bryant “lives in fear” that her children will eventually see those pictures online and be additionally traumatized.

Though largely an international issue, the sport of basketball, the Los Angeles Lakers, and Bryant himself, are very popular in Belize with many Belizeans taking to social media to express their feelings about Bryant’s death.
