UNICEF Belize establishes child-friendly interview rooms for police

Posted: Friday, January 29, 2021. 4:16 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, UNICEF Belize held a ceremony to announce the establishment of a new child-friendly interview room at the San Ignacio Police Station.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected vulnerable children. As public health measures are enforced to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, police officers are an important partner in protecting children and safeguarding their rights to access to justice. It is imperative to equip them to better interact with children,” UNICEF noted.

UNICEF Belize has provided state-of-the-art equipment and the development of standard operational procedures and training on interviewing children for police, social workers, Justice of the Peace and legal aid.

Present at the ceremony was Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa and Officer Commanding the San Ignacio Police Station, Henry Jemmott.
