Senate will not consider second reading of finance bills

Posted: Wednesday, February 10, 2021. 10:36 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: By common consent, the Senate has agreed to defer the second reading of three bills brought from the House of Representatives.

The motion was moved by Leader of Government Business Eamon Courtenay and agreed to by voice vote.

Under the Senate Standing Orders, Section 49(1), the Senate may defer bills for second reading until, as in this case, the bills are considered by the entire Committee of the Whole Senate.

The Senate also nominated Erica Jang to serve on the National Assembly Staff Committee, but Leader of Opposition Business Michael Peyrefitte proposed that a member of the social partners be appointed instead.

Courtenay said it would be taken in consideration.
