Mayor Earl Trapp:“Several Small start-ups received 6-month grace period”

Posted: Friday, April 16, 2021. 11:19 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, Earl Trapp said today that several small start-up businesses received a 6-month grace period after having consulted with the Mayor.

Trapp said that every business operating must pay a trade license, however, due to the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, he has given ‘leeway’ to several small businesses including online businesses to operate with a permit for 6 months.

After that time, Trapp says if the business is successful then, owners can visit the Town Council and apply for their Trade License.

“I personally encourage many people to open their businesses and do all they can to stimulate the local economy,” Trapp stated.

In addition, the Mayor said that many are trying to make a living and survive and he recognizes that in just making a small profit, the people cannot be charged for a Trade License.

However, business owners are invited to visit the Mayor and explain their situations so as to get approved for a letter to operate for at least 6 months free of cost.

With relation to the Facebook post by the council, Trapp said that it was made to sensitize the public on Trade Licenses.

The Mayor also spoke about how established restaurants pay Trade Licenses and taxes, while other food vendors may not be paying and are operating.

“The Trade License that the council charges for small businesses is very minimal,” Trapp explained.

The Mayor also spoke about the Business Tax and General Sales tax that apply to business owners.

Those starting their own business can visit the council for support and tips.
