Belize Audubon Society reminds motorists of wildlife crossing in Southern Belize

Posted: Friday, April 16, 2021. 10:36 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: Today, the Belize Audubon Society (BAS) issued a statement reminding all motorists to be aware of the crossings of wildlife on the Hummingbird Highway.

“Recently, there has been an increase in wildlife deaths by vehicle collision on the Hummingbird Highway, between Armenia and St. Margaret’s villages, passing St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park,” the BAS noted.

Earlier this week, staff of the BAS at St. Herman’s assisted the Belize Tapir Project with removing the body of a tapir from the road near the Caves Branch Bridge.

The BAS has also had to remove the body of a howler monkey on the same stretch of road this week.

“We urge drivers to please reduce your speed and drive with caution along this road, especially at night, as wildlife frequently move in this area,” the BAS urged.

In addition, the BAS says that it will work with the local communities to install wildlife crossing signs along the road in the coming weeks.
