Senior Managers: ‘Salary cut approved in the budget, but that’s an easy fix’

Posted: Tuesday, May 4, 2021. 5:35 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: President of the Association of Public Sector Senior Managers Sharon Frazer, explained today that, even though the Government of Belize (GOB) has already approved the 10 percent salary cut and three-year increment freeze for public officers in the national budget, it can be easily undone.

Frazer, speaking at the official start of public officers going on strike, clarified that there is no tiered approach to the salary cuts and that those cuts are 10 percent across the board for public officers who make more than $12,000 per year. Frazer said that the union is not agreeing to any cuts and will remain on strike for as long as the cuts are in place

“In terms of what would happen if we were to be successful…that’s easy every day they pass supplemental budgets in the House. For next to nothing they pass supplementals. They can also go back and pass a supplemental budget to cover the shortfall and make up that 10 percent,” she said.

The national budget has already been approved by the House of Representatives and the Senate. After meeting with the unions since early this year, government announced that the meetings were “consultation” not “negotiations” to fulfill a legal requirement to have salaries adjusted via the constitutional power of the Governor General.
