By Benjamin Flowers: The Public Service Union (PSU) has decided to remain on strike against the Government of Belize (GOB).

The union made the decision following a letter sent to the joint union negotiating team from GOB, which outlined cost-saving actions and commitments the government will be acting on after its consultations with the unions.

“Each and every Public Officer has the lawful right to take such industrial action. Making this small sacrifice is better than being forced to give up a minimum of 10% of your salary and three increments for the rest of your career without getting anything in return,” the PSU leadership said to its members.

The union also maintains that it wants good governance legislation to be passed which will address corruption in public office. The PSU continues its strike in tandem with the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) as well as the Association of Public Sector Senior Managers (APSSM).

The strike and other industrial actions will continue despite the Government’s warning that any such action taken after May 15 will result in teachers and public officers getting their salaries docked for the time they are off the job.
