By Aaron Humes: Knowing well the struggles his People’s United Party had to get to where they are now, Prime Minister John Briceno offered some empathy for the rival United Democratic Party (UDP), who face potential seismic change at the top of their leadership in the coming days, if not weeks or months.
It starts tomorrow, Thursday, we have confirmed with sources in the party, at the Central Executive Committee meeting as embattled Patrick Faber comes face to face with those who have opposed him and demand his departure.
On his home ground in Orange Walk Town Briceno told reporters: “I know everybody likes to say we need to have a strong Opposition and of course the opponent would want a weak opponent; but at the end of the day, it’s quite unfortunate [to see] what is happening to them, that they can’t get their act together.”
Whoever emerges from the morass has his respect and well wishes, Briceño added, including the putative leader in the House, Moses “Shyne” Barrow: “As to the new leader of the Opposition, I wish him well. I don’t know how you will be able to manage when you have such deep divisions.”
As for the PUP, Briceno added, it remains focused on fighting back the resurging COVID-19 pandemic by encouraging all Belizeans to get vaccinated as quickly as possible, pointing to the urgent need to reopen the economy and provide jobs and opportunities for everyone as well as fulfilling the rest of #planBelize.
Faber, meanwhile, must defeat an internal recall effort among delegates of the party who elected him last July, and stave off Barrow’s ambitious palace coup attempt.
