Mystery in the Atlantic: 20 bodies found on boat, nobody knows who they are

By Zoila Palma: Authorities in the Turks and Caicos Islands are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 20 people.

A boat with 20 bodies was found floating near Grand Turk island last Thursday.

Police say that while investigations continue, they have noted that there is no indication of foul play.

“Work is now underway to establish their identity, the cause of death and the circumstances that led them to be found in the Turks and Caicos Islands waters,” a statement said.

Chief of police, Trevor Botting said that the boat was believed to have drifted off from outside of the Caribbean.

“Whatever the circumstances, this is a tragic situation where many people have lost their lives, and the thoughts and prayers of the Force go out to those families who have lost a loved one. We will do all we can to identify them and contact their families,” Botting added.

Boats carrying migrants are known to frequent the area.
