By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Embassy of Taiwan shared the happiness and joy of their National Day with various municipalities distributing goodwill bags in Belize City, Belmopan, and Orange Walk in lieu of a Taiwan National Day reception due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Government and People of the Republic of China (Taiwan) celebrate their 110th “Double Ten” National Day today, Sunday, October 10.

On the occasion of that celebration, the Embassy of Taiwan held handing-over ceremonies sharing the goodwill bags with the Belize City Council on Monday, October 4, Belmopan City Council on Tuesday, October 5, and Orange Walk Town Council on Wednesday, October 6, 2021.

Taiwan Ambassador to Belize David Kuan-Chou Chien was personally present for the ceremonies with Mayors Bernard Wagner, Sheran Palacio, and Ladrick Sheppard respectively.

“We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the people of Belize for your unwavering staunch support and friendship to my country, Taiwan,” said Ambassador Chien during his visit to Orange Walk.

The Ambassador said he knows the people of Belize have suffered tremendously because of the pandemic. He added that we have to work together to contain the spread of the pandemic.

“Taiwan is Belize’s trustworthy ally and a reliable partner in national development. Both of us share the common values of democracy, freedom, and human rights,” said Ambassador Chien.

“The goodwill bags contained items prepared by members of the Taiwanese Community in Belize, such as traditional pineapple cakes (symbolizing prosperity), round shortbreads (symbolizing reunion), Taiwanese homemade bread, Taiwanese style canned coffee drinks, and bags of flour prepared by a Taiwanese supermarket,” said the Embassy in a press release.

The Taiwan Embassy also handed over goodwill bags to the Police Department in Belize City on Wednesday “to honor the police officers and their tireless efforts serving the community”.

“As this year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Independence of Belize and 32 years of diplomatic relations between Belize and Taiwan, Taiwan Embassy reiterates it will continue to work closely with the Government of Belize to strengthen the strong bonds of friendship through bilateral cooperation,” concluded the Taiwan Embassy statement.
