By Aaron Humes: If he (the Prime Minister) cannot tell something as simple as the departing settlement figure for the ex-governor of the Central Bank, Opposition Leader Patrick Faber asked, can we trust the government to be honest?
Belize has had to pay up to 15 million in legal fees under the recent supplementary motions – something the Opposition had been heavily criticized for in Government.
And the current Government has been less than honest about the origin of the “Blue Bond” when the Nature Conservancy made clear that negotiations started as much as 18 months ago, so the UDP’s crowing that they “woke up on third base” was in fact correct.
And commenting on reports that the hospital bill for the wife of late parliamentarian David Vega was being paid by the Ministry of Health, Faber said that money can go to save others, with all due respect to the Vega family – are those lives more important, he asked?
The payment needs to be clarified – is it an ex-gratia payment in lieu of a pension? And who made the decision – the Minister of Health, or as he insists, the Minister of Finance?
And it’s not just politicians – the recent drug plane saga involves public officers – and it would be corruption if the police were left to investigate itself and prosecute their own officers.
