Central American MS13 gangs in Belize City – Police engaging Immigration Department to help combat their presence

Posted: Thursday, December 16, 2021. 7:50 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize Police Department is working on a collaboration with the Department of Immigration to combat the presence of the Central American gang Mara Salvatrucha (MS13), which has recently been wreaking havoc in Belize City.

Williams said today that members of the gang, who are all related, appear to have begun infighting which has caused a surge of violence in the Antelope Street Extension and Krooman Lagoon communities, even at a time when other gang-ridden areas in the city appear relatively calm. Williams said whether the violence is all in-house with the MS13 or their gang versus another rival gang, police will do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of residents in the area.

“Many of these persons back here are irregular migrants. And if it is that the irregular migrants are causing us problems then we don’t need them in our country they need to go back where they came from,” Williams said.

He said that police will not be targeting everyone’s immigration status, just those in the area who are found to be the cause of the escalating violence. Williams said that the MS13 gang is a ruthless gang and given the enormity of their activities within the region any country should be concerned with their presence. He noted, however, that the situation is currently not beyond the control of the police department.

“I don’t think the number is that big it would be under 20 which is manageable, and I think that it is best we take that opportunity now to go after them before their wings begin to expand,” Williams added.
