By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is funding the design and launch of the Belize Trade & Investment Development Services’ (BELTRAIDE) virtual knowledge center to the tune of approximately $US55,000.00.

“The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the Building Resilient MSMEs: Accelerating Digitization Project handed over $US54,637.69 of Information Communication Technology (ICT) Equipment to BELTRAIDE,” said a joint press release by BELTRAIDE and UNDP.

The UNDP donation which includes 21 laptops, 2 printers, 2 projectors, audiovisual equipment, and accessories is intended “to build capacity of rural women, foster entrepreneurship and promote digitization to accelerate resilience and recovery in response to the Covid-19 Pandemic”.

The UNDP donation will assist BELTRAIDE in its training program entitled “Digital Transformation – Introduction to Technology for MSMEs”. The statement said the training’s objective is “to develop and enhance the technological skills of entrepreneurs and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) so they can access BELTRAIDE’s Virtual Knowledge Center (VKC) and its Business to Business (B2B) Platform”.

Twenty women entrepreneurs from the Female Entrepreneurship Program (FEP) who are also members of Women’s Department groups participated in training sessions held earlier this month in the Toledo District. The first group of ten attended the first training workshop in Punta Gorda on December 7, 2021, while the second set of ten did so in San Pedro Columbia on December 8, 2021.

“The trainings continued throughout rural areas of the country as part of the 16 Days of Activism to end gender-based violence by addressing the existing digital divide and empowering women with transformative skills,” said the statement.

BELTRAIDE and UNDP said future training sessions will also include young people. The objective will also be to enhance their entrepreneurial skills.

“This initiative is funded by UNDP and demonstrates their commitment to assist BELTRAIDE in strengthening its national services to assist entrepreneurs and MSMEs to achieve economic prosperity and sustainability through entrepreneurial development, business innovation, and competitiveness,” concluded the statement.
