Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association splits following rival annual general meeting

Posted: Tuesday, January 11, 2022. 3:00 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Two men are now claiming to be chairman of the Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association (CSCPA), after a breakaway group of cane farmers held a special annual general meeting this past Sunday in Corozal Town.

Former chairman Everaldo Uk was elected as head of a new Board of Directors in elections reportedly supervised by the Sugar Industry Control Board (SICB), and on Monday tried to gain entry to the Association’s headquarters.

But incumbent Vladimir Puck and his team refused to leave and police had to be called in.

Uk told Channel 5 News that a 2015 by-law sets quorum for an annual general meeting at 100 and there were a few more than that present at his meeting. He has written to the “purported board” asserting his right to be Chairman.

But Puck and his team are holding firm. He told reporters that the party line remains the same: the meeting was illegal and any decision there taken does not count: “As far as I am aware, it is somewhat a special meeting that Mr. Uk, a non member from the CSCPA, conducted without proper notification and procedures concerning the way it supposed to be conducted under normal circumstance. Also, that number of persons yesterday, there [are] thirty-four cane farmers that do not form a part of the CSCPA registration, [who] also took part in that special meeting.”

Puck added that he was in his office supported by members from each of the Association’s four zones and that police had been by to keep order.

Puck said the matter would now be dealt with before the courts.
