United Democratic Party cancels press conference, to issue statement on fate of leader Patrick Faber

By Aaron Humes: Breaking Belize News (BBN) has officially confirmed that this afternoon’s press briefing at UDP headquarters, Belize City, has been canceled.

The Party Secretariat has informed BBN that a statement will be released sometime this afternoon.

The briefing had been called concerning what a party press release over the weekend described as the next steps for the Party following a very embarrassing week for its leader, who was accused of common assault and damage to property against his fiancee only to see those charges dropped.

Faber’s only public comments, coming after his appearance in court on Friday afternoon, suggested he was being politically victimized and that in any event what happened between him and Dr. Shanikka Arnold that led her to the police station would remain private between them. He also denied being a fugitive from the law after Police said they were not able to directly locate him, nor follow through with plans to turn him in that Thursday.

Party Chairman Michael Peyrefitte has called on Faber to resign, while other leading party members have effectively distanced themselves from him with general statements of condemnation of gender-based violence.
