Cabinet approves visa requirement to enter Belize for Venezuela, Ecuador, and Dominican Republic

Posted: Thursday, January 27, 2022. 10:00 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: In its weekly briefing Cabinet has said it has approved for the Ministry of Immigration to impose visa requirements for nationals of Venezuela, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic.

This follows the recent incident involving 37 migrants from Venezuela, Morocco, and the Dominican Republic who caught a COPA Airlines flight from Panama to Belize and were denied entry because of irregularities with their claim to be tourists.

Indeed, eight of the group subsequently applied for refugee status and were handed over to the Belize office of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) only to escape from the Help for Progress shelter in Belmopan and allegedly flee to Mexico.

The Ministry of Immigration has noted increasing numbers of migrants arriving in Belize through the Philip Goldson International Airport from Panama via COPA Airline flights and using Belize as a transit point to move northbound.

Belize joins immediate neighbors Mexico and Guatemala in requiring visas to enter for nationals of these three countries.
