Government agrees on $1.5 million payment for stevedores

By Aaron Humes: The Government of Belize and the Christian Worker’s Union (CWU) have agreed on compensation of $1.5 million on account of the privatization of the Port of Belize in January of 2002 as part of a memorandum of understanding.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed yesterday, Thursday, undertakes on the Government’s part to pay the sum by the end of February once the Union provides a comprehensive report of the distribution of funds and accompanying receipts. This payment is without prejudice to individual future claims.

The Government shall also ensure amendment of the Social Security Act to provide for the payment of benefits to casual workers and social security contributors including stevedores as previously agreed by Prime Minister John Briceño within 2022; and further negotiate possible payment to stevedores for abuses suffered during the protest held on July 22, 2020.

The Union will engage with the Port beginning on Monday concerning time for stevedores to work on the unloading of ships backlogged by the week-long strike action in the next 30 days and enjoins the Port to engage in meaningful dialogue, negotiations, and resolution with the Union.
