Christian Workers Union confirms it has received $1.5 Million ex gratia payment from Government

By Aaron Humes: Christian Workers Union president Evan “Mose” Hyde has confirmed that the Government of Belize has issued the $1.5 million ex gratia payment to the Union agreed to by memorandum, defying the objections of the Port of Belize Limited and receiver Arturo Vasquez.

The Union, said Hyde, has voted on how it will share the money and will as it committed to Government provided records of how the money is distributed.

Hyde refused to get into the legal matter of the attempt to injunct the payment but commented that PBL was driven by malice, questioning how it was that they have suddenly become concerned about the parliamentary protocol being adhered to.

But what are their other intentions if any? Hyde said it appears there is a “deep embedded animosity” in the Port’s management to commit resources to this challenge rather than upgrades to equipment and facilities.

Prime Minister John Briceño had said that the money being under five million dollars did not need Parliamentary approval under the Finance and Audit Reform Act and that it would be included in the forthcoming Budget.
