Government of Belize preparing to expand National Health insurance (NHI) to Orange Walk next

By Benjamin Flowers: The Government of Belize (GOB) is preparing to expand the National Health Insurance (NHI) to make it available to everyone in Belize, with the upcoming phase of the expansion set to be done in Orange Walk.

This week Prime Minister John Briceño and Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard began a tour of NHI facilities, heralding the incoming expansion. Briceño said that expanding NHI is a commitment his government made, and he felt that it was time to start making strides towards keeping it.

“Currently, NHI is available to citizens in Southside Belize City, Corozal, and our two southern districts Stann Creek and Toledo. Plan Belize’s goal is to roll out the health coverage nationwide, including the Cayes,” Briceño said.

“We are looking at expanding it to the Orange Walk district this coming year, this new budget cycle, and also on the southside of Belize City,” Briceño added.

He noted that the key to the expansion is proper planning and proper planning and proper organization, pointing out that the previous administration had expanded NHI to Corozal; however, the services being offered at that time were severely limited.

Under the NHI programme, the GOB pays registered facilities so that they can offer heavily subsidized services and medication to Belizeans.
