Trio, including 8-month pregnant woman, taken to court over one bullet and a small amount of marijuana

By BBN Staff: Three people, including a woman who is 8 months pregnant, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today to answer to unlicensed ammunition and drug possession charges.

Thirty-eight-year-old Jessica Sanchez, her pregnant daughter 20-year-old Allisha Thompson, and Thompson’s boyfriend 20-year-old, Edwin Alexander Deras were arraigned over a single bullet and 35 grams of marijuana that was found at Sanchez’s residence during a police search.

In court, Deras mournfully pleaded guilty to the charges, freeing Thompson and Sanchez. The Magistrate told him that she will show leniency given he has no previous convictions but cannot overlook the fact that he had a bullet, given the prevalence of gun violence in Belize.

Deras was fined $400 plus a $5.00 cost of court for the bullet and $350 plus $5 cost of court for the weed. He must pay both fines by May 31 or face three months in prison for each offense.
