Politicians agree on including ‘freedom of the press’ among Constitutional rights

By Aaron Humes: Strictly speaking, there is no freedom to practice our occupation in Belize.

Belizeans have a right to freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution, but the press, though recognized, is mostly tolerated.

Both major political parties say that is to change – the governing party claims it’s as soon as the promised Constitutional review begins, the opposition party says they’ll take care of it when they return if it is not in place before then.

According to member of the Constitution and Foreign Affairs Committee Francis Fonseca: “The Government is embarking upon a Constitutional Reform Commission and certainly that will be one of the recommendations put forward; I’ve heard it from others as well. So, I think it is something that will meet with support from many different quarters.”

Leader of the Opposition and committee member Moses “Shyne” Barrow has committed to doing so as well if the United Democratic Party returns to a supermajority: “Certainly, within the next three years I will be Prime Minister of this country, and as the next Prime Minister with the majority needed to make such a Constitutional amendment, I would.”

But just in case, Barrow added, he made the suggestion to Fonseca and chairman Julius Espat to make the amendment in their planned review.
