Belize Women’s National Football Team to travel to El Salvador by road to face Barbados next Tuesday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As soon as their Women’s World Cup qualifier against Aruba is over Tuesday, the Belize Women’s National Football Team (BWNT) will be packing their bags to hit the road on Wednesday to travel to El Salvador by road to face Barbados next Tuesday.

It happens that the Barbados match was scheduled to play in San Salvador and not in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic putting the Football Federation of Belize in a bind to try to get a flight for the entire team. So, it’s time for another national team to hit the road.

“We were told by Barbados that they wanted their home match to be in the Dominican Republic, so we started from early making arrangements to get our flights, and our hotels, and ground transportation there but that did not work out, unfortunately,” said Football Federation of Belize (FFB) Executive Member Marlon Kuylen.

“We were notified on March 21 by Concacaf that we would play in El Salvador instead and at this moment we are unable to get the entire delegation to El Salvador in time to play the match. We’ve tried all airlines that we possibly could, and we are unable to do so and therefore we have to go by road,” Kuylen said.

“However, we’re leaving early,” Kuylen added.

“Because our match is on the 12th, we are leaving on the seventh so that the girls can get there and recover in time for the match against Barbados.”

Kuylen said the team will travel through Guatemala to get to El Salvador in the best buses.

“Of course, it’s one of the best bus lines, the most comfortable buses you can find in Central America that we’ll be travelling in,” Kuylen said.

The Belize Men’s National Team had to trek it all the way to Nicaragua by road in June of last year for an official game and then did it again in February of this year for two friendlies.

The one good thing about the match against Barbados is that the BWNT already knows the Cuscatlán Stadium where they will play Barbados on Tuesday, April 12, as they played against El Salvador and Panama there in February. The match will be played at 3:30 pm.
