By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise concludes its two-day annual general meeting (AGM) on Friday at Ayin-Ha Resort in Lemonal, Belize District.

On Friday morning during the first session presentations are being made on the Belize Marketing and Development Corporation, the Pesticides Control Board, the Belize Agriculture Health Authority (BAHA), the Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute (SIRDI), and the Resilient Rural Belize program.

During the second session, the Agric AGM will look at the Belize Livestock Producers Association, the Directorate General for Foreign Trade, the Belize Trade & Development Service (Beltraide), the Caribbean Agriculture Research and Development Institute (CARDI), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

The last session after lunch will have presentations on the Inter-American Institute for Agriculture Cooperation, the Organismo Internacional Regional de Sanidad Agropecuaria (the International Regional Organization of Agricultural Health – OIRSA), Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF), and the Ya’axché Conservation Trust.

The MAFSE AGM was opened on Thursday by Minister Jose Abelardo Mai who has been the driving force behind the resurgence of agriculture as a major foreign exchange earner.

“The objective of the AGM is to present accomplishments and work plans that will guide the Ministry in its planning, activities, and initiatives,” said the Ministry of Agriculture.

“The work plans outlined the vision of the various departments and partner agencies to promote agriculture locally and to be more export-oriented under the new programmatic framework of vegetable and root crops, grains, traditional crops, and livestock, among others.”

MAFSE’s Policy Analyst Milagro Matus said the main agricultural commodities over the last year contributed $570 million to Belize’s economy at the primary level. When the added value of processed products such as citrus concentrates and sugar is included, the contribution of agriculture to the economy is much higher.
