BREAKING: Cabinet denies bakers increase in controlled price of sliced bread

Posted: Thursday, April 28, 2022. 10:42 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Today’s Cabinet Brief from Belmopan announces that no increase to the controlled price of 16-ounce sliced bread will be allowed; neither will an increase of 50 percent on the wholesale price.

Bakers as well as flour mill ADM Belize Mills had asked for increases in the prices of flour and sliced bread, both controlled by statute on the basis of increases in prices for wheat and other imports due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Prices would have gone up by as much as 75 cents from the current price of $1.75.

In addition, Cabinet said it instructed the Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Mai, to engage with the Association of Bakers to ensure other alternatives to minimize the possibility of drastic increases in the price of a 16-ounce pack of bread.
