Five of ten police officers injured in traffic mishap

Posted: Monday, May 23, 2022. 9:16 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Five police officers from Belize City were injured, one seriously, after the official police van they were traveling in tipped over into the bushes as the driver lost control.

An official police report states that Constable Douglas Card and his fellow officers from Precinct Two Eastern Division had traveled to the Pontoon Tours on the Vaca Falls-Mollejon Road earlier in the day. On their way back just before six in the evening, Card said he was coming down a hill when he noticed the van starting to drift to one side.

Card began to gradually lose control of the vehicle as it drifted over loose gravel. He applied the brakes and the vehicle stopped at the foot of the hill, then began tipping over on its left side. It slipped off the road, landing on the left side in some bushes. All ten occupants got out and Constable Card continued on to the Benque Viejo police station.

Responding police took five fellow officers to the San Ignacio Community Hospital with various aches and pains: Louise Longsworth, Shanice Bevans, Tiffara Grant, Denique Banks, and Oscar Usher. All except Usher were treated and released; he remains in hospital for a breathing problem. The remaining five officers including Card did not complain of any injuries.

Police are investigating and have obtained a urine sample from Card.
