Prices on almost everything at the grocery store are up including Pigtails

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The high cost of food products in Belize has left Belizeans moving quickly to adjust to the economic situation.

Besides vegetables and fruits that have seen a drastic price increase, the country is currently experiencing a shortage of pork and beef.

Supplier Running W Brand meats issued a statement this week informing customers that the company will not be at this year’s National Agriculture and Trade Show grounds as is customary due to a short supply of beef and pork.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abelardo Mai also told the media this week that the prices of basic food items such as cooking oil, flour, and beef meat have seen increases.

Pigtails, a very popular meat in Belize used in boil-up or with stew beans and split peas now cost a whopping $7.25 per pound.

Along with backyard gardening and planting okra, Chaya, spinach, callaloo, sweet potatoes, sweet peppers, cebollin, and tomato, Belizeans are now being encouraged to find cost-saving ways to fix their dinner plates.

Minister Mai says that cooking oil is a zero-rated product and pays no duty or environmental tax but the price has gone up in the market.

The Minister also noted that all agro-imports have gone up including the prices of fertilizer.

Minister Mai said that it is an international phenomenon but countries need to find ways at home to deal with the situation.
