Amnesty International: El Salvador is committing a ‘flagrant’ violation of human rights

Posted: Friday, June 3, 2022. 8:17 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Amnesty International reports that about 18 people have died in state custody during El Salvador’s gang crackdown.

Amnesty International noted that the Central American nation is ‘committing widespread and flagrant violations of human rights and criminalizing people living in poverty.’

In their sweeping gang crackdown across the country, El Salvador has committed massive human rights violations including arbitrary arrests, violations of due process, torture, and ill-treatment, the report said.

According to the UK-based rights group, 18 have died in custody since President Nayib Bukele declared a state of emergency and began the crackdown on gangs in late March.

The information is from the Salvadoran nonprofit organization Cristosal and noted that those that died were male and some of them died due to lack of timely medical attention while others showed signs of suffering aggression.

In addition, the country is reported to have mass hearings of up to 500 detainees charged at the time.

“Instead of offering an effective response to the dramatic violence caused by gangs and the historic public security challenges facing the country, they are subjecting the Salvadoran people to a tragedy,” Erika Guevara-Rosas, the rights group’s America’s director, said in a statement.

However, surveys demonstrate that 70% of Salvadorans support the government’s decision to reduce gang crime.
