Woman remanded to jail on theft charge after former reporter claims she stole money from his pants

Update: In the initial version of this story, our information suggested the defendant showed up at the complainant’s house in underwear and that there was an implication of sexual solicitation. Breaking Belize News hereby retracts those previous statements.

By BBN Staff: Forty-eight-year-old Belize City resident Georgia Young was arraigned in court this week on a charge of theft after she allegedly stole $70 from the pockets of a man she claims to be in a relationship with but which he denies.

Roy Davis, 68, writer and former court reporter told police that around 2:53 a.m. on June 12, he was awakened by a knock on his door. Realizing it was Young’s voice, Davis claims he answered the door and found Young standing there asking to come inside to use the bathroom.

Davis said he let her in and when she was finished he went to the bathroom but while he was still in there, she told him that she was going to buy and she would return. She did not return.

Davis further claims that when he came out he checked his pockets and realized that $70 was missing from it, so he made a report to the police.

In court, Young claimed that she never stole anything from Davis and that the two are in a long-standing relationship. She also said that there is an explanation to how she acquired the money but she was too embarrassed to discuss it in open court.

The magistrate told Young that she would have to give her explanation once the case goes to trial and offered her bail in the sum of $1,000 plus one surety of the same.

She was unable to post bail and was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until August 12.
