By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Department of Co-operatives, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, will celebrate 100th International Day of Cooperatives on Saturday, July 2, at the Queen Victoria Park in Orange Walk Town.
This year’s International Day of Cooperatives is being observed under the theme ‘Cooperatives Build a Better World’.
The activities in Orange will run from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
“They foster economic participation, fight against environmental degradation and climate change, generate good jobs, contribute to food security, keep financial capital within local communities, build ethical value chains, and, by improving people’s material conditions and security, contribute to positive peace.”
The United Nations said cooperatives are a “human-centred business model, inspired by the cooperative values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity and the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others” and are “building a better world”.
